Ninja is a Japanese term for a spy of feudal Japan (1185-1868 approximately). The ninja is by definition the expert in the techniques of military strategy and intelligence are called ninjutsu and who have a long history. However, the historical sources and encyclopedic Japanese report that the term ninja has experienced significant transmission only after the fifties, ie starting from the popularization – mostly through manga and television broadcasts – of characters known by this name in literature and theater entertainment the late Edo period (1601-1868).

We must therefore distinguish the character of the ninjas, now well known in the West, the warriors and the military also very famous in the bloody clashes that of medieval Japan they used methods spy (sometimes using the help of experts known as ninjutsutsukai, raps, and other names shinobimetsuke ). The myth of the ninja nevertheless deserves proper attention to its significance and the success it has enjoyed and continues to enjoy in Japan and especially abroad.

The ninja wore clothes blacks for night clothes and brown-khaki for the hours of the day: we know thanks to authentic specimens in the museum Ninja Iga-Ueno. They were experts in martial arts and the meticulous physical preparation took up most of their day. If necessary, a Ninja could act as a hired killer and make a targeted killing, but no massacres like now customary in the collective thinking.

They, then, not only were spies. In addition to espionage itself, they were experts of sabotage, torture, and in fact, the physical elimination of opponents (targeted killing), typical actions of commandos. Practicing martial arts at a high level. They were, in short, multi-purpose. Not infrequently, they had police duties for the maintenance of public order, or forming a kind of secret service employed by the local daimyo. Finally, often, they were also invested with the task of bodyguard Shogun: a kind of praetorian guard of Japan.

The Ninja operated from about 1185 to the end of the shogunate in 1868, when it ended the so-called “Japanese Middle Ages”. In fact they did not cease to be trained, but their use became more “targeted” and their preparation was strictly and meticulously organized centrally by the State: diminished in number, but the quality of their performance increased dramatically. For example, unlike what happened in previous centuries, from 1890 they were forced to learn one or more foreign languages.

Figures of undercover agents into enemy lines with characteristics identical to those of the Ninja were described by the sources of the tsarist army during the Russo-Japanese War, and specifically in the battles of the Yalu River, Mukden and during the siege of Port Arthur.
